JOSÉ MARTÍNEZ RUIZ “AZORÍN”

JOSÉ MARTÍNEZ RUIZ “AZORÍN”

José Augusto Trinidad Martínez Ruiz, more well-known by his pseudonym Azorín, was a Spanish novelist born in Alicante in 1872, as well as an essayist, dramatist and literary critic.

At the end of 1906, Azorín was in Mallorca and at the Charterhouse of Valldemossa for a few days, and he dedicated several pages of his anthology “El paisaje de España visto por los españoles”, (The Landscape of Spain as Seen by Spaniards) to  Valldemossa . The local newspapers reproduced it and in “La Almudaina” Azorín penned a few lines entitled “Desire”.

“The land I love is Mallorca; the landscape I would like to see every hour of the day is that of Miramar, and I would like to live in this old house with its pleasant patio, on the coast opposite the calm and blue immensity” (Azorín).
