The majority of people know S´Estaca as the house that the American actor Michael Douglas purchased and where he regularly spent his holidays since 1989. The house was put up for sale in 2015. However, not many people know that S’Estaca was the property that the Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria gave as a present” to his Mallorcan girlfriend, Catalina Homar. Those that identify S´Estaca with a fishing village that, once again in the words of the Archduke, served as a base port for the best and bravest fishermen in Mallorca, is an increasingly small number.
S´Estaca is a small place on the coast, in the municipality of Valldemossa, midway between Sa Foradada and Port de Valldemossa, comprised of about twenty little houses. Originally, they were the cabins were the fishermen of Valldemossa could shelter during the tough working day. Now, neither fishermen nor sailors spend the night there, however S´Estaca is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful, suggestive and majestic places in all of the Serra de Tramuntana.
At present, the little houses of the fishermen have been turned into weekend or holiday refuges to be enjoyed by their owners or usufructaries.
In his magnum opus Die Balearen there is a description of S’Estaca as the Archduke got to know it midway through the 19th century, a fishing village comprised of 14 little house, whose construction he himself had authorised. He also states that he took care of improving access to the cove in order to facilitate the movement of people, especially when carrying the baskets of fish that they took to be sold.
